Ryan and I just watched "The Day After Tomorrow", a kind of cheesy end-of-the-world movie.
As soon as it ended, we were flipping channels and quickly noticed that all the stations had the same thing on. Just about an hour ago, Mt. St. Helens had an earthquake, not real big - only 2.0. But after the quake, a very large plume of ash shot up out of the mountain. The plume rose straight up 36,000 ft!
The plume and ash are now blowing to the Northeast. There is no sign of it affecting Vancouver or Portland at all. They aren't overly concerned about it. We've had regular earthquakes up there and minor erruptions for the past few months.
For us it was a little exciting because of the timing. Turn off a movie where half the world freezes over to see breaking news in our backyard. We're really bummed we weren't outside where we could see it though. It's been a beautiful, clear day - it would have been quite a sight!

Yes, we have been hearing about Helen on the news and seeing impressive pictures. So, do we think Helen is relieving pressure or getting ready for somthing more?
I read your description at first as "a kind of CHEERY end-of-the-world move" which had me going for a bit!

Nah, it's just part of the process. She's letting off steam and rebuilding herself. This is the biggest erruption they've had since 1986, but it still isn't considered real big. They say that these kinds of erruptions can go on for years. It's fun to watch.
