It's been a great day! I don't ever expect much for my birthday because Ryan usually works and I am content with just having a relaxing day. But then all sorts of fun surprises pop up out off nowhere and I always end up feeling so loved and blessed. :)
It all began exceptionally early. I woke up at 3:45 am!!! Not intentionally. At first I really didn't think it was fair, but then I realized that it was a great gift from my Heavenly Father: about 3 hours of peace and quiet before the rest of the house got up. Wonderful! And then, I heard the rain and knew that Heavenly Father was also watering my garden for me! Doubly wonderful! Whenever my husband or kids asked me what I wanted, I told them one thing: I just don't want to have to do any chores! I knew my family would probably help me out with the house, but I assumed I would still need to make sure my garden was cared for. But Heavenly Father took care of that for me, so I got the whole day off! :)
At 7am, my aunt knocked on my door to take me out to an early breakfast. It was so great to visit with her and hang out, just the two of us. I was touched when she admitted that she isn't a morning person, but that she loves to take her kids out early for breakfast on their birthdays. It was a sincere act of kindness and love and I felt so special that she would want to do it for me!
When I came home, I found that Acadia and Aurora had cheerfully done some chores and had made some other birthday surprises for me. Rori gave me her homemade card right away, but Cadi waited until later. Cadi volunteered to watch Rori for me again while I went out shopping with Susan. We went to Kohls. Have I mentioned how much I LOVE Kohls? Well, Kohls loves me, too! They gave me these for my birthday!
Hello! SUPER CUTE!!! I love them!!! I did have to pay a teeny bit, but after using the discount and gift card in the mail, plus another gift card that they really did send for my birthday, I brought the price down to about $6 - after tax! Not too shabby. I can't wait to wear them! :D
The rest of my afternoon was quiet and lazy. Then Ryan surprised me by coming home from work early! Acadia gave me her homemade card plus 3 watercolor paintings that she made for me. My favorite is the one on the top:
We ate one of my favorite homemade soups that I had simmering in the crockpot all day, and finished it all off with some strawberries and cream ice cream cake and a few more birthday gifts. It has been a fantastic day, full of love, smiles, and surprises. Just what every birthday should be filled with. :)

New Calling
Yesterday I received a new calling at church. In the LDS church, there is no paid ministry, so the members each accept different responsibilities to share the work and learn and grow through different opportunities. These responsibilities/jobs are called "callings" and they can last for any length of time. You don't campaign or even ask for a calling, it is something that the Bishop and other leaders pray about and carefully ponder who the Lord would like to serve in that capacity at that time. Once they receive the name, they extend the call and ask if you'd be willing to do it. You can say yes or no, it is completly optional. When you are "released" from a calling, it isn't an indication of poor execution or anything negative, it is simply time to do something else. As we serve in our callings, we are often asked to do things we haven't done before, so it's a great opportunity to learn and grow in different ways. It helps us meet new people and develop relationships we might not have developed otherwise. We are blessed spiritually and often in other ways as well. It is a great blessing to be able to contribute and be a part of the Lord's work.
But back to my new calling. I've known this one was coming. No one told me, just whisperings of the spirit, but I knew that this would be my next calling even before I was released as Relief Society president. And I knew when, too. Not the day exactly, but I knew who I was replacing and for what reason.
Lyndel Wilkinson (one of my first Mia Maids when I served as the Mia Maid counselor in YW many years ago) had put her papers in to serve a mission. She hadn't received her call yet, but I knew that when she did, I would fill her spot as Gospel Doctrine teacher.
Gospel Doctrine is a Sunday School class and it is pure scripture study. We really dive in, study it out, discuss what it means and how it applies to us. We seek to understand the doctrine of Christ's church so we can better live it. And we do this weekly in a Sunday School setting. This year, we are studying the New Testament and my first lesson will be in two weeks. My topic is AWESOME! It will be "He Is Not Here, For He is Risen" - can you think of a more positive, hope filled topic? I can't.
Teaching Gospel Doctrine is very intimidating. We have a great group of scriptorians in our ward and now I'll have to teach and lead the discussions as we study the scriptures! But I am actually excited and looking forward to it! I am amazed at how true that statement is.
Four years ago, I knew I was being prepared for a big change in my calling. I had been serving in the Young Women presidency for a few years and I loved it. But I knew my time was almost over, even though I didn't want it to be. After some time, I came to grips with that thought, but I still felt the preparations. Why was it taking so long? What on earth did I need to have SO MUCH preparation for? I began to think of the scariest calling I could get.
Gospel Doctrine teacher.
That had to be it! There was nothing else I could fathom even being considered for that would be so scary and require so much preparation. So, when I sat in Bishop Green's office, I was prepared to accept that call. But he said something else - Relief Society president. I thought it was a joke. I laughed! But he didn't, and he wasn't joking. I instantly was wishing it was Gospel Doctrine teacher! lol I was sure that was what I had been being prepared for.
Well, it turns out, in a round about way, I was!
My time serving as Relief Society president was challenging, rewarding, wonderful, and sometimes terrifying, but over all, a huge and remarkable blessing in my life. I learned and grew so much and I don't want to stop learning and growing. I knew I would be given a rest after being released from RS, and I really needed it. I was exhausted! I spent my first week just sleeping - like a lot! I was sleeping as much as I do when I'm pregnant! lol I didn't realize how exhausting it had been until the mantle had been taken from me and I had time to sit without responsibilities and ponder on my experiences.
I have been grateful for this rest. But in the last few weeks, especially since I knew what was waiting for me, and especially knowing exactly when Lyndel would be leaving for the MTC, I have felt very anxious. I had been given a smaller calling just a few weeks after my RS release, but it isn't heavy, busy, or challenging and most of all, I knew it wasn't all that the Lord wanted me to do. So I've just been waiting, hoping, anxious, and excited to get going on this. I've pondered what it means, what it will require, what I hope to gain, and what I hope I can bring to our Sunday School discussions.
I am still intimidated when I think about some of it. But more than that, I feel a love for the scriptures, a strong testimony that burns within my heart, a desire to serve, a desire to learn and grow, a desire to be faithful and obedient. And even though I don't know as much as many who will be sitting in the classroom, I have a testimony of personal revelation to help me be prepared enough to begin and lead the discussions that will allow them to share their knowledge, experiences, and testimonies that will help to enlighten and enrich the rest of us.
The Lord knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows when and how we need certain things done. I didn't need to know that this would be my calling so far in advance. But the Lord knew it would be easier for me this way. I could have had it totally sprung on me last week and I'd be shocked, scared, and would stumble my way through the next couple of weeks trying to get the courage and confidence to teach my first lesson - but I would have done it. And eventually, I would have gotten used to it and all would be fine. But it was so much nicer to know 4 months ago, to get the nervous part out of the way while it was so far off that it wasn't really real yet. It was nice to reach a point where I was just waiting and hoping for the call, wanting it, instead of dreading it.
So if you're in my ward, please be patient with me; I am not the best teacher or anywhere near the scriptorian I hope to someday be, but I will always do my best to be prepared. And please read the lesson ahead of time so you can help me out by being better prepared to participate in the discussions. I am looking forward to them, and I hope you are too. :)

Fireworks
I usually just try to take photos during the fireworks (still haven't perfected it), but this year I also tried getting some video. I found that some of the fireworks were just too big for how close we were, so they were pretty fuzzy. And I wish I had taken the camcorder to the balcony, which had a great vantage point to see all of the fireworks going off all over the city. I didn't record the finale, in fact, I didn't take any pictures of the finale either. This year, I just WATCHED it. And it was great! :)
But here is a little sampling of some of the firework fun we had.
Ryan opted to sit out most of the fireworks this year. Usually he is the head hauncho, with Chad as his wingman. This year he passed the torch (quite literally) to Chad who managed most of it by himself with a little help with Spencer.

4th of July
We LOVE the 4th of July! We love it for many reasons, not least of which is for the great blessings we enjoy by living in this great country. We are so grateful for all who have fought and made it possible for us to enjoy those freedoms. We are grateful for our founding fathers, for their courage and determination to create a safe, new country where people can live and worship as they please.
I did precious little to deserve or earn my freedoms, but people I have never known sacrificed all so I could have them. I am profoundly grateful.
I have always loved celebrating our Independance Day, but since moving here to Washington where so many more fireworks are legal than any other place I've ever lived before, the enjoyment has been raised to a whole new level. lol Ryan discovered his inner pyro shortly after witnessing all the glorious possibilities and we soon became familiar with the Indian Reservations where you can get some totally awesome deals on fireworks. *insert evil laughter here*
So, with all that great anticipation, we began our preparations for this fantastic and meaningful day. Starting with Rori's hair. Yep, even hair can get into the patriotic spirit. I tried this last year and it ended up kind of lop-sided, so I did it again this year and it turned out much better. lol
I brought two red/white/blue desserts to our family BBQ/party. I wish I had taken a picture of the one that my cousin brought though! It turns out that my sister did the same thing at their party in Sacramento though, so you can look at hers and get an idea of how Alisha's was. Alisha used red velvet cake for her red, so it was a lot darker, but other than that, it looked just like Debi's. It was pretty impressive!
The BBQ was delicious and it was a lot of fun visiting and playing with everyone. We invited a family we are friends with to come join us and it was fun to introduce them to my family and have them join in our fun. After the BBQ, most of us walked up the hill to the park to have a water balloon fight.
It was a fierce battle and I believe that more than one person went home with a bruise or two, but everyone had a fun time and eventually when the balloons ran out, we took the walk back home and started getting ready for fireworks.
Have I mentioned how much Ryan enjoys this portion of the festivities? lol We always end up with a fantastic show!
And after all the mortars, shells, cakes, and fans had been blown up, we kept the fun going for a little longer. We hadn't used very many of the sparklers yet, and Sami had an idea she just wanted to try...
Fun! But then we ran out of sparklers and really did have to admit that the fun was over. Time to clean up (Rori was such a good helper!), pack up, head home, and start dreaming about next year's Fourth of July!

Beaches
When we met for lunch on Acadia's birthday, my aunt, cousins and I decided to go to the beach the following Tuesday, as it was to be a rather hot day here and a very pleasant day there. Too often, it's cool at the beach, but it was forecasted to be sunny, clear, and warm. Lucky for us, the forecast was right!
The guys had to work, so it was just us girls plus Trey, which worked out perfect because we all fit in my minivan so we didn't have to take two cars. ;) We really didn't have a very solid plan. We thought we'd head into Astoria first, climb the tower, then decide which beach(es) to visit. Again, with it being such a beautiful, clear day, we had a great view from the top of the column!
We ate our lunch at one of the picnic benches at the column... until the lawnmower started to head in our direction and everyone with allergies grabbed their food and left. lol We decided that the best thing to do after eating a picnic lunch by the coast, is to have ice cream at the beach. And the best ice cream is found at Scoopers. To Long Beach we drove:
But after eating our delicious ice cream, we wanted to play at the beach and look at cute little shops and the best place to do that, is at... Seaside! So south we drove and ended up here:
It was so nice! A bit busy, but not too overly crowded, and we had a really good time! The girls had fun playing in the waves!
I LOVE the ocean!!!
We played at the beach for a couple/few hours, I really don't remember how long, but it was just the right amount of time for our fun little day trip, and then went to visit a few shops, inluding the Candy Man, where I filled up a bag of Salt Water Taffy for Ryan, and the "mall" where Aurora and Trey got to ride the merry-go-round.
Finally we stopped at Subway to have a healthy dinner, then drove back home. It was such a fun day! And it made us all very excited and hopeful that our week at the beach in August will be just as beautiful! :)
